The Five Second Rule

Apparently this is old news.

But I am nonetheless shocked and appalled.

The five second rule is NOT TRUE!

You heard me folks. Official research has been completed, and it is now scientific fact that in LESS than Five Seconds, food dropped on the floor gets covered in bacterica. Clemson University students participated in this research study to learn how to conduct scientific research, and you can get more information about their conclusions here.

Additional research from scientific sources validated the Clemson studies. For example check out these points, part of an ACES News article published September 2003 -

--Seventy percent of women and 56 percent of men are familiar with the 5-second rule, and most use it to make decisions about tasty treats that slip through their fingers.

--University floors are remarkably clean from a microbial standpoint.

--Women are more likely than men to eat food that's been on the floor.

--Cookies and candy are much more likely to be picked up and eaten than cauliflower or broccoli.

--And, if you drop your food on a floor that does contain microorganisms, the food can be contaminated in 5 seconds or less."

In a competing study in 2007; however, students at at Connecticut College determined that DRY foods were safe if picked up within 30 seconds! Does this mean that you can find information on the internet to support any view point? Hmmmmm.......

So I don't know what to think. But I can say that the risk, newly described in these interesting studies, make me just want to say - Ok. EEEwwww!

Soap and water, anyone?

Yes, mythbusters busted that myth a while ago. I loved the bit about the bottom of a woman's purse being the dirtiest thing of all. I don't know about you, but I often place my purse on the floor near me, and I used to come home and put it on the kitchen counter while I put things away.
